Data Centers from Edge to Cloud

Our Focus

We design, build, and operate data centers that are great for companies and their people... but better for the planet

Live Data Center Renovation

In order to address a facility with outdated power and cooling infrastructure (with no capacity for growth), PTS needed to perform site upgrades live, while the data center remained operational throughout construction.

We were able to improve the efficiency, resiliency, and reliability of the data center.  PTS installed an upgraded 28kv substation, two critical UPS systems, and implemented an air containment system.

Highlights:

  • Installation of 2 new Critical UPS Systems to create A/B power
  • Increased overall data center reliability from a Tier I to a Tier III with Tier IV attributes
  • Installation of a new utility substation to upgrade the site to 26KV
  • Construction of a high-density zone supporting 10KW Racks by using In-Row Cooling.
  • Efficiency imporovements of +20%

Situation

  • Aging 20 year old primary data center that needed to remain operational throughout construction
  • Operating at the power and cooling limits of existing supporting infrastructure
  • The facility had experienced multiple outages in the past

Impact

  • Increased risk of downtime to operations as a result of higher failure rates
  • Out of power & cooling capacity to support the strategic growth
  • Increased operational costs due to inefficiency and unscheduled maintenance

Resolution

  • Site alternatives were considered and ruled out due to costs
  • Phased-construction approach to tackle the hardest issues first, sequentially building for the next phases of work
  • Installation of 2 new Critical UPS Systems to create A/B power with plans to upgraded further in a future phase
  • Installation of a new utility substation to upgrade the site to 26KV
  • Construction of a high-density zone supporting 10KW Racks with in-row cooling
  • Complete replacement of all critical and emergency power systems along with the accompanying distribution
  • Air Containment and upgrade of traditional perimeter CRAC units was implemented to support the overall 1MW critical load density
  • Efficiency improvements of +20% and increased reliability from Tier I to a Tier III w/ Tier IV attributes

The Key to Cutting Data Center Construction Costs? Use Minimal Infrastructure

The average enterprise data center costs between $10 million and $12 million per megawatt to build, with costs typically front-loaded onto the first few megawatts of deployment. Seasoned data center builder Peter Sacco, founder and CEO of PTS Data Center Solutions, claims that it is possible to drive down costs by around 25 per cent or more, simply by being more disciplined on design.

Situation

  • Have two (2) aging edge data centers, some colocation, & some cloud
  • On-premises infrastructure needs have been shrinking
  • Increased risk of downtime to operations because of higher failure rates
  • Increased operational costs due to increased scheduled and unscheduled maintenance
  • Wasted and unused IT space

Resolution

  • Improved hybrid data center strategy leveraging previous investments
  • Designed and built new edge data center in the mixed-use facility using repurposed adjacent space
  • Refreshed the 18-floor IDF stack

Outcome

  • Updated the strategic plan for data center operations
  • New, reliable, resilient, primary edge data center in the mixed-use facility
