Data Centers from Edge to Cloud

Our Focus

We design, build, and operate data centers that are great for companies and their people... but better for the planet

Live Primary Edge Design/Build

PTS has a long history of working closely with a large retailer-owned cooperative.  For this particular project, we focused on a data center renovation to address the increased risk and cost associated with aging (and capacity-constrained) support infrastructure. The primary data center was to remain operational throughout upgrades and renovations.

Highlights:

  • Increased overall data center reliability from a Tier II to a Tier III with Tier IV attributes
  • Improved power usage by ~20%
  • Rebuilt the supporting NOC (80,000 sf) and surrounding office space
  • Replaced legacy cooling with higher efficiency solutions

Situation

  • Aging & capacity-constrained supporting infrastructure
  • 20-year-old primary stand-alone data center to remain operational through upgrade and renovations
  • Operating at the power and cooling limits of existing supporting infrastructure

Impact

  • Increased risk of downtime to operations as a result of higher failure rates
  • Out of power & cooling capacity to support the strategic growth
  • Increased operational costs due to inefficiency and unscheduled maintenance

Resolution

  • Site alternatives were ruled out due to costs and desire to operate own data center
  • Phased construction tackled hardest issues first, sequentially building for next phases
  • Complete replacement of all critical and emergency power systems
  • Replacement of legacy cooling with higher-efficiency solutions
  • Layout the data center into rows for phased IT migrations
  • Increase the data center overall RLU density to allow the overall footprint to shrink 40%
  • Rebuild the supporting NOC and office space around the data center  (80,000 sq ft)
  • Efficiency improved +20% and reliability increased from Tier II to Tier III w/Tier IV Attributes

The Key to Cutting Data Center Construction Costs? Use Minimal Infrastructure

The average enterprise data center costs between $10 million and $12 million per megawatt to build, with costs typically front-loaded onto the first few megawatts of deployment. Seasoned data center builder Peter Sacco, founder and CEO of PTS Data Center Solutions, claims that it is possible to drive down costs by around 25 per cent or more, simply by being more disciplined on design.

Situation

  • Have two (2) aging edge data centers, some colocation, & some cloud
  • On-premises infrastructure needs have been shrinking
  • Increased risk of downtime to operations because of higher failure rates
  • Increased operational costs due to increased scheduled and unscheduled maintenance
  • Wasted and unused IT space

Resolution

  • Improved hybrid data center strategy leveraging previous investments
  • Designed and built new edge data center in the mixed-use facility using repurposed adjacent space
  • Refreshed the 18-floor IDF stack

Outcome

  • Updated the strategic plan for data center operations
  • New, reliable, resilient, primary edge data center in the mixed-use facility
