Data Centers from Edge to Cloud
Our Focus
A holistic approach to data center renovation with a focus on early planning
While most of the time renovating or upgrading data center cooling is due to outdated or out-of-warranty solutions, more data center operators are looking to deploy high density IT infrastructure. Infrastructure such as blade servers put significant cooling demands on legacy data center cooling solutions such as room- or row-based cooling solutions. These solutions are less able to support required cooling. High density IT infrastructure poses a challenge due to the need for precision-based cooling at the rack level.
PTS Data Center Solutions engineers are familiar with the latest approaches to data center cooling including rack-based cooling solutions , in-row cooling solutions , air flow management , and next generation approaches to increase the efficiency of cooling solutions (I.e. Powertron Global PermaFrost NMR™ Refrigeration Solutions.
Data Center Cooling Renovations require careful analysis of Key Design Criteria (i.e. what does the IT infrastructure need to today and into the future), engineering analysis & design via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) , and review, design, and engineering of various approaches to cooling renovations.
PTS takes a holistic approach to data center cooling renovations with a focus upon early planning. These facility upgrades are more complex than one thinks and it is critical to have a fundamentally sound data center design process aimed at:
- Meeting IT support requirements
- Reducing risk
- Providing adaptability and scalability
- Improving maintainability and serviceability
- Delivering a newly renovated facility which meets the engineered plans
PTS’ Data Center Cooling Renovation approach begins with a thorough planning & feasibility phase prior to implementation of architectural and engineering services. This approach leverages the first five phases of the PTS data center project process for successful planning leading into cohesive design services which support client requirements.

The PTS capabilities provided for a Data Center Renovation project include Planning & Feasibility and Design & Engineering as follows:
- Key Design Criteria (KDC) Development Establish Load, Availability, and Deployment Density Design Criteria
- Site Surveys Survey the Existing Conditions to Establish Facility Constraints
- Assessment Services Establish Recommendations for Upgrade and/or Improvement
- Conceptual Design with CFD Modeling Establish a Visual Representation of the Recommendations and Verify Design Considerations using CFD Models
- Project Cost Estimating Establish a Project Cost Estimate Including All Hardware, Labor, and Professional Services
- Preliminary Master Project Schedule Development Establish a Preliminary Schedule to Understand the Project Timeline
- Architectural & Engineering Design Plan and Engineer Room, Floor, Physical Security , and Other Intrinsic Elements Using Design Approaches Necessary for Mission Critical Facilities
By focusing early on the KDCs required by IT systems and solutions with an eye on future requirements in years 2 – 5, PTS is able to work with clients to develop and implement Data Center Renovations that will support requirements for years to come. For example, PTS leverages Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) engineering design techniques to model the existing heat dissipation with current IT loads and considers future IT roll-outs and their impact on the proposed cooling solution implementation. This allows our engineers to make consistent and solid recommendations on cooling system design for today’s load as well as anticipated future loads.
After the design is completed and approved by the client, PTS’s implementation team can handle all necessary upgrades including installation of air containment solutions, upgrades to appropriate cooling systems, installation of next generation refrigeration solutions, and other required cooling renovation upgrades.

The Key to Cutting Data Center Construction Costs? Use Minimal Infrastructure
The average enterprise data center costs between $10 million and $12 million per megawatt to build, with costs typically front-loaded onto the first few megawatts of deployment. Seasoned data center builder Peter Sacco, founder and CEO of PTS Data Center Solutions, claims that it is possible to drive down costs by around 25 per cent or more, simply by being more disciplined on design.
