Selecting the Optimal Data Center Cooling Solution
By Peter Sacco, President & CEO, PTS Data Center Solutions,
Inc.
A better way to think about data center cooling is
to forget the notion of adding ‘cold’ to a room. Rather, think about
air conditioning as removing heat from the room. To that end, there
are two components that make up any effective cooling solution. They
are first, the Heat Removal section, often referred to as the CRAC,
CRAH, or the evaporator, and the second, the Heat Rejection section
which is named according to the cooling approach executed and
referred to as the condenser, dry-cooler, fluid-cooler, cooling
tower, etc.

Overseeing A Data Center Move
Processor.com
Overseeing the complexity of a data center move can feel
overwhelming because there are so many moving parts, decisions, and last-minute
changes that can crop up. But when taking on that role, data center managers don't
need to do all the work-and indeed, they shouldn't, believes Peter Sacco, president
of PTS Data Center Solutions (www.ptsdcs.com).

Michael Petrino, vice president for PTS Data Center Solutions, recommends
investing in software that can provide redundancy planning and 3D graphics for space, power and
cooling capacity.

Improving Energy Efficiency in Data Centers
Data Center Knowledge: Industry Perspectives
Peter Sacco, founder and president of
PTS Data Center
Solutions, presents an article on improving energy
efficiency in Data Centers. It is, perhaps, second only to
performance when deciding upon data center facility and
information technology (IT) network design. Higher energy
consumption is a recurring cost that can add dramatically to
operating expense over time.

What will modularity cost you?
DatacenterDynamics Focus
Predicting total cost of ownership of a data center is a
difficult, complicated task which has to be performed before one
is built in order to compare different options and find one that
fits the best. Several large data center design and construction
service providers – including large IT vendors that also have
professional services divisions – have been touting modularity
as a new and efficient way to build data centers.
Peter Sacco, president of the US data center
design, construction and consulting firm PTS Data Center
Solutions, said he has also approached a vendor about a
non-containerized modular design on behalf of customers.
Multiple times, he found it difficult to get the information
required. Customers approach PTS to find out the potential price
difference between deploying a modular data center and the
traditional approach. “Right now I can’t give them a straight
answer,” he says.

Getting Involved In Company Direction & Planning
Processor.com
It’s role in overall corporate strategy saw a jump in 2010. The
jump is due in part to the way the corporation views the IT
department—as a strategic business enabler, not just an
extra-large business expense.
Peter Sacco, president at PTS Data Center Solutions (www.ptsdcs.com),
says IT has become accepted as a primary driver in any company’s
ability to deliver on its core competencies. As such, Sacco says
a misalignment of IT capability with business needs will result
in operational inefficiency and lack scalability to adapt to
growth. “Today, most every company has to worry about making IT
a competency to remain competitive and to differentiate
themselves,” he says.

Small Improvements Yield Big Benefits: Concentrating On IT
Infrastructure Makes A Difference
Processor.com
If you’re looking for ways to go green in your data center, keep
in mind that sometimes the little things matter.
PTS’
President Peter Sacco says that it was easy to pinpoint which
change had the most impact: “Reduction in overall physical
server footprint was the key. While the amount of energy saved
was not nearly as great as touted by the virtualization software
providers, it was nonetheless substantial,” he says. “We saved
about 20% in IT consumed energy, which resulted in about a 25%
facility energy savings when factoring in the cumulative effect
of energy savings in power and cooling.”

Consider An Emergency Generator
Business
Continuity Info
“A UPS provides clean power, guarding against surges and drops,”
says Dan McHugh, project manager at PTS Data Center Solutions.
'In order to provide longer-term power, you'd need racks and
racks of batteries. A generator allows you to be out two to
three days, so you're not losing money.' PTS is a consulting
firm that does design work, construction, or construction
management.
